Calcium carbonate is used as a raw materials for refining of sugar from sugar beet. Calcium oxide produced by the calcination of the carbonate is slaked in the sweet water to form calcium hydroxide suspension which causes the precipitation of the impurities of the plant material allowing it to be easily separated from the sugar syrup.
